"People are just as wonderful as sunsets if you let them be. When I look at a sunset, I don't find myself saying, "Soften the orange a bit on the right hand corner." I don't try to control a sunset. I watch with awe as it unfolds."
Carl Rogers, founder of Person Centred Counselling
Hello, I'm Emma.
I am a qualified person centred therapist based in Burford, Oxfordshire. More specifically I am someone who offers you a space to be heard and understood. I believe that one of the greatest gifts you can be given in life is to speak and be truly listened to, heard and understood, this is what I can offer you.
A non-judgmental, friendly, compassionate and confidential space in which to discuss and explore your issues whatever they may be. I really believe that experiencing validation of your feelings can allow you to explore them in greater depth and together we will explore them, at a pace that you feel comfortable with.
Sessions That Work Around You
I offer sessions that work for you, be that weekly, fortnightly or monthly and have availability for some evenings and weekend sessions; I am currently working online and by telephone. I also offer walk and talk therapy in and around the West Oxfordshire area. I can now also offer face to face sessions from the Wellness centre on Beechwood Park in Stow-on-the-wold.
My Clients and Approach to Counselling
I love working with clients of all ages and backgrounds to help them to build their self confidence and self worth, helping them feel confident and more content in their lives. I utilize a variety of theories in order to best help my clients.
My core training is in person centred therapy, but I pull on elements of CBT, Psychodynamic therapy, TA and transpersonal therapy. In essence, I work in a way that best helps you. If you are someone who is very visual and creative, we can work in that way, equally if that’s not your thing, we can stay with focusing on exploring and communicating verbally.
For the last 4 years I have worked within an agency called Clean Slate who help and support people who have experienced physical, mental, sexual and financial abuse. Helping them to process and heal from their trauma and to help them to see, value and regain their own power.
Miscarriage, baby loss and infertility our topics very close to my heart, I have seen and experienced first hand the devastation and heartbreak they bring with them, the longing for answers, the aching to hold your baby in your arms. The feeling that this pain will never end, that no one can understand, that it will never get better.
I am a big believer that the grief doesn’t go away, or that time heals all, but that we as people grow around the grief, it doesn’t get smaller, we grow around it.
I work a lot with people who are struggling with anxiety and feelings of not being good enough, maybe dealing with imposter syndrome, I work with this by helping people to become more present generally, and also by improving their compassion to self, as this plays a huge part in the above issues.
In 2010 I lost a very dear friend. In a way he was my inspiration for starting my journey to become a counsellor. After receiving therapy myself when he passed, I really wanted to be able to give that gift to someone, the gift of having a space in which you can explore, cry, shout, and recall happy moments, a space where you can just be, no mask, no judgement.
I am an accredited member of the BACP and adhere to their code of ethics.
